Legend4ry Items: the Ring of Magic Missile

D&D Next has left me with no inspiration. It's true. I've been trying to think of something to write since last week and found that my 4e muse had disappeared. Part of it was surely due to excitement of the (then) upcoming play-test and part of it was surely with life being quite demanding on my end these days. But that's neither here nor there.

There are a lot of things that I want to convert for 4e. I have a lot of my plate! I need to continue to work on my Dyson's Delve conversion as I've only got the first level completed! I need to convert the Vampire, Mind Flayer, Flumph and more to 4e. It's going to be awesome and I'm finally happy I got that jolt of inspiration again, mostly in part to some awesome folks on Twitter.

So, finally, and without further ado, BEHOLD: THE RING OF MAGIC MISSILE!!

This item started off as an idea for a useful low-level item to drop into my Dyson's Delve conversion. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of much of the 4e magic items and would prefer to make my own as the DM to drop into play. They may be a little bit stronger or weaker depending, but I find that they are useful regardless.

The Ring of Magic Missile was inspired by a Swords & Wizardry game I played awhile back. In this game one of the finds for the party Magic-User was such a ring that gave the Sorceress some versatility in combat. Yeah, it's S&W so MUs suck at lower levels, but it was still a godsend.

It got me thinking, though, and that's what's important. How would something like this work in 4e play? Well, it would seem silly if the power associated with this particular ring required a Standard Action, what use would it be to a Wizard then? None, and that seems silly. I like the idea of magic items that anyone can use it to varying degrees of success. What's that? The party Fighter wants to try out the ring? Well, sure, why not? They may not succeed, but damnit if they cannot try!

Magic items are fun to make, and I would love suggestions about them, as well as any monsters that you guys and gals would like to see converted (or re-imagined) for 4e. Keep them coming!

Until next time,
