Legend4ry Items: The Flaming Sword and the Vorpal Blade

It's no secret, I love spectacular magic items. I want them to feel unique. As much as I love 4e, there is something of a magic item bloat. In addition that, I hate the idea of items having a Daily power. Well, at least most of the time, that is. I want magic items that are mysterious and are perpetually active. Like a certain ring of invisibility or a glowing dagger, belts of strength, or even rings of magic missile.

Today, straight from the ol' Legend4ry Vault we have both the Flaming Sword and the Vorpal Blade.

As Markus' hands burned as he grasped the blade tight in a fist in his left hand. His Tiefling heritage helped keep the pain at bay and for some reason he actually felt stronger that he ever did before. Fire had never really hurt Markus in the past, but now he felt rejuvinated and protected by it. And it was about time too as the Goblin hordes marched forward on the heals of their Hobgoblin general. The general was a brute, a true beast with a wicked blade. He had felled men stronger and faster than Markus without a hint of pause.

This same general had hunted Markus and his party down throughout the crypts and they had seen the fallen bodies that served as testament to the Hobgoblin's deeds. It was in such a room, littered with his trophies, that Markus and the general faced off. Markus had found himself separated from his friends as they wandered about the crypts surely facing off against the many Goblin minions. Markus felt fear as the Hobgoblin approached with his rugged axe held high in his hands. Markus flinched, something he'd never be able to forgive himself for, as the blade came down upon him. Eyes still closed and seconds later Markus realized that he wasn't hurt; in fact, he heard screaming and the licking sounds of flame. He saw the Hobgoblin on the floor covered fire and Markus raised his sword and lowered it upon the screeching general once, twice, three times.

The concept of the Flaming Sword is simple, it's a sword that is on fire and has the potential to light up a room and your enemies. Simple, right? But how do I make that fun? I like the idea of a protective fiery aura that activates when the wielder needs it the most. Perfect for a Defender, but really, anyone could make great use of this blade. Check it out below:

The Vorpal Blade is also quite a simple concept. Taken right from the mind of the Lewis Carrol's "The Jabberwocky" and influenced by the editions of the past, I loved the idea of bringing this to 4th edition.

The blade has a simple purpose, to decapitate and do lots of damage to the wielder's enemies. The premise is simple, I think, and I think that the high critical damage as well as a potential to decapitate an enemy is fitting both for the lore of the blade and the current edition.

As an added bonus, I am posting the critical fumble and critical hit charts that my group uses and enjoys. A few of the elements were added for the cinematic aspect of play. We love swingy play and these charts being used by both monsters and characters leads to exciting combat encounters. Many an encounter has been won by an unfortunate monster fumble or character critical. Warning: Critical Fumble and Critical Hit charts are not for everyone and can drastically affect play, especially in 4e!

Up next on Legend4ry are my conversions of both the second level of Dyson's Delve and my conversion of the Dungeon Crawl Classics level-0 adventure/character grinder "The Portal Under The Stars!" As well as some DM notes on my end and tips and tricks that I have used to varying levels of success.

Until next time,
